New York Jets
*Laveranues Coles hurt his shoulder at the end of the Colts game on Sunday, but there aren't a lot of details as to the extent. He was in a sling after the game, but no word on his availability for the Jacksonville game.
*Cedric Houston hyper extended his knee and will miss the Jacksonville game. Look for Leon Washinton to have an increased role.
*Chad Pennington is on the injury report, but for a strained calf. nothing related to his shoulder injuries. He's looking like if he can stay healthy he'll have a great year.
*Kevan Barlow should get the start on Sunday, but as you know we are not big fans of his. We still believe that at some point in time, Cedric Houston will win out as the primary back. But with the Jets offense, that doesn't mean a ton this year.
*Curtis Martin has been placed on PUP. This should come as no surprise to you.
*The Jets first team offense has only 1 touchdown this preseason, and starter Chad Pennington was not on the field for it. Kevan Barlow fumbled against the Giants which can't endear him to his new team. The Jets will be a mess this year.
*Kevan Barlow and his salary have been unloaded to the Jets. We told you Curtis Martin was just about done and we said the job in San Francisco was Gore's. We really like Frank Gore in San Fran and only moderately think the change of scenery will help Barlow. While he's practically guaranteed to start, Barlow has a way of sucking. Both Cedric Houston and Derrick Blaylock have looked decent in camp. At least Barlow will not be taking carries from Gore. Skip Hicks becomes #2 in San Francisco.
*Lee Suggs failed his physical, thereby voiding the trade to the NY Jets to replace Curtis Martin. I didn't like this deal for the Jets for a number of reasons. The Jets need a back who can step in and start with Martin's return in doubt. Suggs does not seem to be that back. I'd rather the Jets pursued a back like TJ Duckett, although Cedric Houston is in effect his clone and the price might be too high. If this was the best the Jets will be able to do, the season may be a right off to be in position to grab a top back in next year's draft.
*Derrick Blaylock got the start this past week in Curtis Martin's absence. The larger Cedric Houston did a little better than Blaylock, though, so this position is still wide open.
*Chad Pennington showed signs of aggravating his surgically repaired shoulder Saturday against Tampa Bay. He was seen warming up on the sideline and did not return to the game. He claims to be fine and will practice in full Monday.
*Add Marcell Shipp to the list of names of backs the Jets have made inquiries about.
*Pennington has been moderately impressive, showing some signs of life in his arm that haven't been there in a while. He looked sharp in a recent scrimmage, going 14-17, 117 and a TD. Watch him in preseason to see if he can keep this up.
*Curtis Martin appears done if the reports that he has lost cartilage in his knee and is walking with bone on bone. The Jets are actively and aggressively pursuing a starting back with names like Chris Brown and Michael Turner being tossed around. Certainly whomever lands in NY will have value. Otherwise, Cedric Houston has the inside track as a starter with Derrick Blaylock right behind him.
*Justin McCariens seems to have lost his starting job to Tim Dwight for now. With Pennington at the helm, I wouldn't worry too much about the #2 in New York or think too hard about Coles, either.
*Chad Pennington won the starting job for now. Don't let this have too much effect on your drafting. We don't expect Pennington to have a ton of success or even start all the games this season.
*Rookie Kellen Clemens is the early leader in the quarterback race, and according to the NY press, it's not even close. It's hard to imagine a rookie will start week 1, but neither Pennington nor Ramsey scare a lot of defenses, so anything can happen.
*Starting center Trey Teague broke his ankle and will miss most of camp and possibly into the regular season. Not what the Jets need right now. The center position is the anchor of the offensive line.
*Coach Eric Mangini has announced that the starting qb job is still up in the air. Our bet is that Ramsey wins out because of a stronger arm.
